Hucknall's oldest streets are colliery terraces, and they take mortice locks. The town was a pit town from 1861 until the last colliery closed in 1986, and the tight rows of Victorian terraces nearest the centre were built for the men who worked them. Those have timber front doors, which is the one door type where BS3621 is genuinely the right standard to fit rather than something an insurer has asked for by mistake.

The estates are uPVC and composite now. Ruffs was started in the late 1930s, paused for the war and finished afterwards, and semi-detached houses like those are the bulk of what sells in Hucknall today. Almost all of them have had the original doors replaced at some point, which means a euro cylinder and a multipoint mechanism. If the handle has gone floppy or you are lifting hard to lock it, that is the gearbox rather than the lock, and it is a repair rather than a new door.

Newer builds like Wellesley Park. Composite doors from the last twenty years usually came with a cylinder that meets no particular standard. Checking yours takes thirty seconds — if it sticks out more than about 3mm past the handle plate there is enough there to grip, and a TS007 3-star cylinder is a ten-minute swap.
