What a Locksmith Actually Costs in Nottingham (2026)
The quick answer
A locksmith in Nottingham typically costs £70–£220 depending on the job. My prices are fixed and quoted before I start: £110 to get you back into a uPVC door (euro cylinder), £70–£90 for a lock change. No call-out fee.
Market vs me
For a quick sense of what's normal before the detail — the first three figures are independent UK numbers. The rest are mine, so you can judge how a Nottingham one-man band compares.
| Figure | Source | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical UK daytime labour rate | from £85/hr | Master Locksmiths Association price guidance |
| UK average cost to change a lock | ~£100 | MyJobQuote 2026 cost guide |
| Common UK range, lockouts & lock changes | £70–£130 | Rated Locksmiths price survey |

| My lockout (euro cylinder), fixed | £110 | This page. In writing. |
Notice the lock change: the UK average is around £100, and mine runs £70–£90 including the work. I'm not the cheapest locksmith you'll find in a Google ad — the £39 ones are a different thing entirely, and we'll get to them — but you won't find a hidden number on the invoice either.
Why locksmith prices are all over the place
Here's the thing most locksmith websites won't tell you: the trade is unregulated in the UK. There's no licence and no standard rate card — the Master Locksmiths Association's own guidance notes that locksmiths "can charge any price," and BBC Watchdog ran a whole Rogue Traders piece on where that leads. It's why one company quotes £59 on the phone and the invoice says £400.
Three things legitimately move the price:
- The lock itself. Getting into a euro cylinder (£110) and a Yale nightlatch (£130) are different jobs with different techniques — that's why they're priced separately below, not bundled into one vague "from £X" figure.
- What's actually broken. On uPVC doors especially, "the lock's broken" is usually the gearbox (£120–£140), the full mechanism (£220), or the door dropping out of alignment (£100) — not the cylinder. Different part, different price. It's why I diagnose before quoting on repairs rather than guessing on the phone.
- Time of day. Weekend and evening call-outs carry a modest premium — enough to make it worth turning out at short notice, agreed with you before I set off, never sprung on you after.
What should never move the price: the job "turning out harder than expected" after you've been quoted. That's the scam, and it has a pattern.
How the bait-and-switch works
The pattern, every time:
- An ad with a suspiciously cheap callout — "£39 locksmith!"
- A call centre answers, not a locksmith. They won't give a fixed price. "The engineer will assess on site."
- The engineer arrives, declares your standard lock "high security" or "seized," and drills it — destroying a lock that could have been opened without damage.
- Now you need a new lock too. Cash preferred. Final bill: £300–£500.
The defence is boring but bulletproof: get a fixed price before anyone sets off, from the actual person doing the job. If whoever answers can't give you one, or the person on the phone isn't the person coming out, put the phone down.
That's also why I answer my own phone. There's no dispatcher between you and the price.

Getting back in
| Job | Fixed price |
|---|---|
| Gain entry — euro cylinder (uPVC/composite doors) | £110 |
| Gain entry — Yale-type nightlatch (wooden doors) | £130 |
Locks changed
| Job | Fixed price |
|---|---|
| Lock change | £70–£90 |
uPVC door repairs
| Job | Fixed price |
|---|---|
| Gearbox replacement | £120–£140 |
| Full multi-point mechanism change | £220 |
| Door realignment (dropped/catching door) | £100 |
A note on the ranges: where you see £70–£90 rather than one number, the spread is the part, not the labour — a basic cylinder and a higher-security one cost different amounts to supply. You'll know your exact figure before Regan starts, and it won't change after. If you're changing your lock specifically because it's vulnerable to snapping, it's the same £70–£90 price — see what actually matters when choosing the replacement.
What "fair" actually looks like on the day
The reviews below aren't outliers. "Prompt, professional and tidy… fair price" is the standard every job is held to — the fixed-price promise isn't a marketing line, it's the reason jobs like that get a five-star review instead of a complaint. If a job's more involved than it first looked, you hear that before anything is touched, not on the invoice afterwards.
"No upselling, no nonsense, just honest work done properly. Finally feel confident my door is secure."
Tracey B, Nottingham"Prompt, professional and tidy. Fitted my new lock quickly, works perfectly. Fair price and highly recommended."
Raheem A, NottinghamGet a real price, not a guess
Every job's a bit different, and the numbers above are typical prices, not a locked-in quote — the fastest way to get an exact figure is to call or text on 07414 727717 and describe what's going on. You'll get a fixed price before anything starts, whether that's over the phone for a straightforward lockout or once Regan's had a look for anything more involved. If you're locked out right now, this guide covers what's worth trying before you call anyone.
These are the same prices wherever you are on the patch — Beeston, Bulwell, Arnold, West Bridgford, Hucknall, Ilkeston and across to Derby. There's no zone pricing and no mileage added on.
